The American continents possess a great wealth of traditional music. Some of it, that of the Indians, has been in existence here for a long time. Another part of it, on the other hand, has been brought from other continents—mainly Europe—and preserved intact. Some, again, has developed as an offshoot of these imported foreign traditions; and some has resulted from the combination of separate traditions on American soil. Finally, some has come about independently, through the particular character and values of the American cultures, with relatively little stimulation from older traditions.
